Project Overview

Rapid growth across the Auckland region is placing increasing strain on school infrastructure. Alongside the need for entirely new facilities, many schools are also requiring additional classrooms and reconfigured learning spaces to accommodate increasing student numbers.

To address this, the Ministry of Education has made roll growth projects and new school builds a top priority. In partnership with Crown Infrastructure Delivery, the Ministry is delivering 44 new teaching spaces across 9 Auckland schools as part of its Roll Growth Programme. The focus remains firmly on delivering these projects with maximum efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

The Challenge

In late 2024, 10 schools across Auckland were scheduled for upgrades. The project had to delivered across 10 different school sites simultaneously to minimise disruptions. Some of the sites were essentially undeveloped, requiring the installation of entirely new infrastructure. Each school had to fit the specified delivery and inspection timelines, and all projects had to be complete and ready for Term 1 2025.

On a project like this, you need suppliers you can trust – one that delivers with speed, reliability, and quality.

The Moddex Solution

Moddex was contracted by Southbase Construction to deliver a full design, manufacture, and installation solution for across the 10 Auckland school sites. With tight deadlines and simultaneous delivery required, Moddex’s pre-engineered systems proved essential to the program’s success.

Moddex’s use of standardised designs and offsite manufacturing not only speeds up installation but also drives down costs, making them the smart choice when timelines are tight.

Four dedicated installation teams were deployed across the various sites, ensuring sufficient resources were available for site measurements, shop drawings, and installation works. Daily planning sessions were held with the Moddex Projects team to ensure key dates were being adhered to and any delays or issues were fed back to the construction site teams to ensure any issues where quickly solved.

For these projects, the offsite manufacturing process was the only way all 10 schools could be completed by the required date. Shop drawings and design approvals were done by collaborating with the onsite building teams to confirm key dimensions such as stair rises and ramp set outs well before any onsite construction began. This meant handrails and balustrades could move into production and be delivered while the decks and buildings were still being assembled onsite, enabling the entire program to meet its tight Term 1 deadline.

The overall program was completed up to 50% faster than standard typical processes & methods would bring.
