Over one kilometres of Moddex modular barriers support the $111M Ocean Drive upgrade – with speed, compliance, and reliability.
- Client: Ditchfield Engineering
- Location: NSW
- Sector: Road
Project Overview
Significant progress has been made on the $111M Ocean Drive Duplication project, a critical infrastructure upgrade set for completion by the end of 2025. Designed to accommodate the region’s growing population and visitor demands, the project has been under construction for two years.
“The primary goal of this project is to widen Ocean Drive in Port Macquarie to improve traffic flow and connectivity,” says Adam Hashem, Project Engineer at Ditchfield Contracting.
The project will transform 3.4 km of roadway from Green Meadows to Matthew Flinders Drive, expanding the existing two lanes into four. Additionally, it includes:
- Upgrades to five major intersections
- Off-road shared pathways for enhanced pedestrian access
- Dedicated on-road cycle lanes for safer commuting
This project is utilising the latest construction methods and equipment, including noise mitigation measures during construction to ensure minimal disruption to local residents.
The Challenge
One of the biggest challenges on this project has been the requirement for products on short notice due to tight timelines between structure completion, as-built data collection, and installation deadlines.
“Moddex has been working to expedite the announced lead times to adhere to the project deadlines” Hashem noted.
The Moddex Solution
To support this large-scale infrastructure upgrade, Moddex was contracted to supply and install over 1km of safety barrier solutions, including:
”What led us to choose Moddex for this project was their easy and prompt communication, along with competitive pricing,” Hashem explained, highlighting the key factors that made them the ideal partner.
Joe Stead, State Manager at Moddex, echoed this sentiment: “The modular nature of our system enables fast, efficient assembly and delivery, saving valuable time and ensuring we meet the tight schedules without compromising on quality or compliance.”
Compared to traditional welded solutions, modular handrails offer:
- Faster installation – reducing delays and labour costs
- Simplified design – fewer technical drawings and approvals required
- Factory-controlled production – ensuring quality and compliance
The Outcome
By streamlining the entire process from design to installation, modular solutions help major projects stay on time and within budget. “This is the first time we have worked with Ditchfield, and they have been a pleasure to work with,” said Stead. “Their collaborative approach has ensured a smooth process and timely outcomes.”
Hashem also expressed his satisfaction, stating: “Yes, I would recommend Moddex to others.”
