Project Background
Considered the largest piece of “health and fun infrastructure” in the south east of Metropolitan Melbourne, riders and walkers now enjoy the 25 kilometre shared path built as part of the Peninsula Link freeway project from Carrum Downs to Moorooduc.
Abigroup was the design and construction company on the Peninsula Link project and selected Moddex’s innovative Bikesafe™ galvanised bike path barriers for cyclist safety over the 500 metre bridge over the Frankston Freeway which forms part of the Peninsula Link Trail.
In addition to the one kilometre of Bikesafe modular path guard rails installed, other sections of the shared rider-walker path also enjoy the safety provided by Moddex galvanised handrails, guardrails and barriers. Due to the modular design, no on site welding is required while ensuring consistent quality.
Why was Moddex product selected?
Constructed from hot dip galvanised steel, the unique modular design of Bikesafe bike path guard rails provides maximum strength, cost efficiency and longevity. Moddex bikeway barriers have an expected life to first maintenance of 30 years due to the fact that there is no welding involved in the installation process.
The one kilometre of Bikesafe barriers were delivered and installed within four weeks of the order being received by Moddex. This was an extraordinary industry achievement but more noteworthy due to the fact that the barriers had to be heavily customised to marry with the architectural features of the bridge and the rails had to be rolled to the radius of the path, requiring special technology.
Bikesafe meets all Austroads safety requirements for bikeways and paths. The resulting ease and speed of installation due to no on site welding delivers proven cost savings and reduces safety hazards.
