Due to growing concern about pedestrian and cycling safety, the Australian Government’s National Capital Authority (NCA) required a temporary safety barrier along the shared path on the western span of Commonwealth Avenue Bridge over Lake Burley Griffin.
Whilst there was a longer-term design and road management plan for the Kings and Commonwealth Avenue under public consultation, a barrier would still be required for at least two years alongside the existing barrier structure.
The NCA consulted with Pedal Power ACT, Canberra Cycling Club and the ACT Government’s Bicycle
Advisory Group regarding the barrier and they had given their support for the final design by Moddex.
Why was Moddex product selected?
Moddex was able to supply a cost-effective solution for the Government which easily integrated into the bridge structure alongside the existing barrier.
Moddex worked with the NCA to provide modular bikeway barriers which are double the height of the existing barrier and painted grey to meet heritage requirements.
To minimise the impact on motorists, pedestrians and cyclists, installation took place during a night-time works program that took two weeks to complete. The no-weld assembly eliminated the need for hot works permits and site shutdowns to deliver a safer, quicker set-up and installation.
The no-weld, modular system also means that the barrier can be easily disassembled when the Kings and Commonwealth Avenue design strategy is implemented.
