As stated in AS1428.1-2021 Clause 11.2 (b), stairs must have a handrail complying with Clause 12 installed on both sides as shown in Figures 26 (a & b).
For the terminations of the handrail, it must extend a minimum of 300 mm horizontally past the transition point at the top of the stair & at the bottom of the stair, it must extend at least one tread depth parallel to the line of the stair nosing plus a minimum of 300 mm horizontally from the last riser (see Figure 28).
Below, there are six examples of how the handrail should terminate at the top or bottom of a stair according to the Australian Standards. These are shown in Figure 26(c).
