Werribee St, Level Crossing Removal Project

Project Background:

The Victorian Government has heavily invested into major infrastructure projects to remove level crossings across metropolitan Melbourne, upgrade rail networks and track stabling yards. The Werribee Street Level Crossing Removal has been removed, with a new rail bridge now spanning over Werribee Street.

Why was Moddex product selected?

Moddex were delighted to be specified by HATCH and Pitt and Sherry to supply CB20 Commercial balustrade system. This system was initially specified but needed to comply to AS5100.2 Clause 12.5. Under the proprietary Bridgerail™ family, Moddex overcame this challenge by adapting their existing product range to meet Metro Train Melbourne’s requirements. The configuration BR20M was supplied as a pre-engineered solution suited to public access areas forming part of road, rail or other elevated bridge structures, complying with standards.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the project was expedited which required Moddex to deliver quickly and efficiently within a month. Without compromising on quality or safety, Moddex’s agility to modify a product with mesh infill saved the client valuable time and costly project delays. Moddex’s pre-engineered mesh infill panels that integrate with existing Moddex barrier systems offer a fitting solution that meets specific Metro Trains Melbourne (MTM) criteria.

Moddex’s Solution

Using a propriety design that met specific requirements, Moddex was able to deliver at once and reduce the lead time that would have been involved in developing a customised product. The product was installed on maintenance platforms and walkways to ensure workers and the public are safe. Moddex bridge barrier system with mesh infill stretched across 1.83 kilometres, allowing for both freight and passenger trains. Moddex also worked alongside the Level Crossing Removal Project to supply over 1.53km of TR25 Tuffrail handrail and balustrade along the elevated trackside.

Moddex worked collaboratively with Victoria’s Road and Rail Authorities, Consulting Engineers and Civil Contractors to ensure the project was running smoothly and efficiently. Members involved were regularly kept up to date and were able to successfully deliver as-specified products on time and on budget. Improving travel for the 20,000 vehicles that travel through this crossing daily, Moddex’s no-weld solution fit the project brief perfectly for installation on the elevated rail structure.
