It’s with immense pride that Moddex announces its achievement as the second runner-up at the recent North Canterbury Business Awards, a testament to our unwavering dedication to sustainable practices.
The North Canterbury Business Awards run every two years and are an opportunity to recognise those who are working to improve the world around us in their everyday practices. The award emphasizes the growing importance of sustainability in business and marks a significant step forward in promoting environmentally responsible practices.
56 businesses made the finals this year. The judges, acknowledging the finalists’ efforts said, “This year, a new raft of organisations have been selected as finalists. That brings us great hope – that a growing number of businesses are making progress on the issues that matter.”
Moddex is so excited to be included in the journey alongside so many others dedicated to preserving our planet and securing a sustainable future.
Why we need to act now.
The call for prioritizing sustainability in our everyday workplaces is more urgent than ever. Issues such as climate change, resource scarcity, and excessive waste mean action needs to be taken. Embracing environmentally friendly practices isn’t just a choice; it should be an obligation toward our planet and future generations. Every company holds the potential to make changes, big or small. We can all do our part in making sustainable decisions and choices aimed at minimizing our environmental impact.
How Moddex is taking action.
We must admit, that being environmentally conscious feels GOOD. However, we recognise that sustainability is more than just being conscious, it means actually taking ACTION.
Our key objectives for sustainability are:
- Implement energy-saving procedures
- Improve environmental performance to minimise our carbon footprint
- Take action towards becoming a paperless office by 2025
- Stringent recycling procedures
- Contribute to our community and drive corporate social responsibility
- Integrate sustainability into work practice
There are many ways Moddex is committed to making the world a better place, one day at a time. Here are just a few!
In 2022 we achieved Toitūcarbonreduce organisation certification (ISO 14064-1). The programme helps us accurately measure our greenhouse gas emissions and puts in place strategies to manage and reduce impacts.
Specifically, we are committed to long-term measurement of our Emissions Inventory. We will achieve this by gaining an understanding of emissions management and reduction and will communicate and build our culture around this methodology.
Year one has seen us collaborate with suppliers and discuss ideas with staff to reduce emissions. In subsequent reporting periods, the management team supports and contributes to the development of a detailed emissions management plan for the next year and the future. As we build our plan, targets, and goals are set to ensure we continually improve our emissions inventory.
The Moddex way of doing things minimizes waste by removing the need for cutting and welding on-site. This means waste is minimized for our customers and we work hard internally to make use of every piece of material in our warehouse. Anything we can’t use gets recycled. Moddex has implemented lean training which looks at reducing waste and improving flow. This helps us to think about creating needed value with fewer resources and less waste. This is a practice consisting of continuous experimentation to achieve perfect value with zero waste.
Reducing our carbon footprint is a big one for us. That’s why for every invoice we generate, a tree is planted by the Moddex team. We are focused on planting trees and shrubs that are native to the region, which in turn, provide many benefits to ourselves and the environment. To date, we have planted 1,524 trees in the local area. We have participated in Clean Up Australia Day, which is a great practical way for us to clean up, fix up, and conserve our environment!
Moddex has invested in The Great Game of Business, which provides ongoing financial literacy training to all Moddex employees. This training allows teams to make process improvements, informed sourcing decisions cost savings, and reduce wastage.
Let’s look towards the future!
We recognise that a successful future for our business is dependent on the sustainability of the environments, communities, and economies in which we operate.
