Moddex has once again proven that innovation is in its DNA, with its Ezibilt™ pre-engineered system adapted into a fully compliant temporary pedestrian footbridge on the Eastern Freeway: Burke Road to Tram Road upgrade.
When you think of Moddex Ezibilt™, you might picture ramps, stairs, and platforms — but this project proves just how versatile the system can be. Working from a summary scope of works, our in house Senior Solutions Engineer Alireza Mahdieh custom designed, certified, and delivered a footbridge using standard Ezibilt™ components, integrated with Conectabal commercial balustrades, Felxalyte kerbrail edge protection and FRP non-slip decking sheets to form a fully compliant walkable surface.
Installed along Thompsons Road in Bulleen, the six-metre structure provides a temporary pedestrian connection across a small service/drainage easement, maintaining safe pedestrian connection and foot traffic flow within one of Victoria’s most significant freeway upgrade projects.
The structure was designed and certified to comply with AS 1428.1 & AS 1428.2:2021 (Design for Access and Mobility) and AS 1170 (Structural Design Actions), ensuring full accessibility, safety, and performance across every element of the bridge.
By leveraging the system’s pre-engineered modular design, the team was able to minimise installation time and disruption within a high-traffic construction corridor. The platform was fabricated and assembled off-site, then delivered and secured using pre-drilled anchor points, with final legs and supports bolted down on-site for precise alignment. Moddex Conectabal balustrades and Flexalyte kerbrail were the only other components needing to be bolted in on-site.
“Innovation is in our DNA,” Moddex CEO Alvin Rowland said. “Having in house engineering capability means we can adapt our pre-engineered systems to suit a huge range of project requirements and deliver solutions that are both efficient and compliant.”
Part of Victoria’s Largest Freeway Transformation
Delivered by the Eastern Freeway Burke to Tram Alliance (CNOP JV) — comprising Laing O’Rourke, Symal, WSP, and Arcadis — the project is one of Victoria’s most significant infrastructure upgrades, designed to reduce congestion and improve travel efficiency across Melbourne’s east.
A Testament to True Pre-Engineered Flexibility
By combining pre-engineered modular design with in house engineering expertise, Moddex continues to redefine what’s possible in safe access systems and delivering smarter, faster, and more adaptable solutions for Australia and New Zealand’s most demanding infrastructure projects.
