Landing requirements for ramps under NZS 4121:2001

As noted in New Zealand standard NZS 4121:2001 for access and mobility, ramps require level platforms or landings:

  • At the top and bottom of the ramp
  • Whenever there is a change in direction
  • Whenever doors open off them

The landings need to have a minimum dimension of 1200mm. Figure 11 below shows the option of a 1500mm landing. This option allows for wheelchair users to rotate the wheelchair through 360degrees, enabling the landing to be used not only as a rest area, but also to return down the ramp.

The below drawing shows the Moddex Ezibilt Ramp designed to comply with these standards.

We would recommend specifying the Ezibilt ramp in 600mm increments, as the system is put together with a combination of modules to suit the site requirements.

For landing safety, landings need to have handrails at a height of 840mm – 900mm on all open sides, as shown on the Moddex Ezibilt Ramp below. Where people could fall 1000mm or more from a landing, a barrier at the height of 900mm is required, refer to NZBC clause F4/AS1.
