Project overview

The Mecwacare Ballan Aged Care Redevelopment was a $30 million project delivering an upgraded 42-bed supported living home in Ballan, Victoria. Delivered by SJ Higgins, with architecture by Watson Young, the staged redevelopment was designed to support modern aged care living through upgraded resident accommodation and supporting facilities. Moddex was engaged by existing client SJ Higgins to supply handrail and balustrade systems across Stage 2 of the redevelopment.

Moddex solution

The project team originally considered Moddex’s standard balustrade range before being introduced to our newest FlatBal™ flat bar balustrade system. As one of the first FlatBal™ projects completed in Victoria, the project provided an opportunity to deliver a more refined balustrade finish while still using a systemised solution.

FlatBal™ was selected for the resident room balconies, as well as stairs and landings throughout the facility. The clean flat bar profile provided a more architectural alternative to traditional round tube balustrades, making it well suited to the modern aged care building development.

Moddex also supplied Assistrail® for supporting handrail applications, including back-of-house stair areas. In total, Moddex supplied 148 metres of product across the project, including AR10, AR20, FB10 and FB40 configurations.
