Moddex Bikesafe® Barriers Boost Safety in the Bellarine Peninsula
The State Government of Victoria is currently in the midst of rolling out their biggest investment in roads in the state’s history. Major Road Projects Victoria has been transforming and future-proofing major roads and infrastructure by reducing congestion and travel times, improving safety, and connecting communities throughout metropolitan and regional regions of the state.
Deemed the Bellerine Peninsula’s biggest road infrastructure project to date, the recently completed Drysdale Bypass Project is a 6 kilometre upgrade that has significantly improved safety and eased congestion through alternative travel routes.
As a part of the $117 million upgrade, Moddex was contracted by Decmil for supply and installation of our Bikesafe® Bikeway Barriers to the new shared walking and cycling path (SUP) along the Drysdale Bypass. Moddex supplied and installed 310 lineal metres of our modular bicycle barrier to the bypass that stretches from Jetty Road to the north of Whitcombes Road.
Completed in late 2020, the SUP project was executed with high efficiency through an expedited process where Moddex products were specified directly into the CAD drawings and moved along for a fast turnaround following site survey. The project was completed before the proposed deadline and to budget.
The Drysdale Bypass is a major improvement to the pre-existing infrastructure. The upgrade has successfully reduced traffic and increased safety to connecting routes, with fewer trucks on previously congested roads and the addition of the alternative option of the shared path.
Why was Moddex Selected for this Project?
Requiring a quick turnaround, punctual delivery and easy installation, Moddex was selected to work with the Decmil team during the tender stage due to our ability to meet site supply dates with a cost-effective system.
Safety and compliance are of upmost importance on shared use paths for pedestrians and cyclists. Bikesafe® Bikeway Barriers are intrinsically engineered for guaranteed compliance to the requirements of the Austroads Design Guide (Part 6A and 6B).
As the shared path presented stormwater drainage hazards either side of the path, Bikesafe® configuration BS40 was the product for compliance with a full balustrade infill. A standard full barrier, BS40 has smooth continuous deflection rails for Austroads compliance, with top rail, handrail and balustrade infill. For aesthetics and longevity, the client opted for our black powder coat to the entirety of the barrier system.
Bicycle Barriers That are Easy to Specify and Built for Compliance
Moddex provides a cohesive solution with our Bikesafe® Bikeway Barriers which are pre-engineered and designed to meet the safety and functional needs of public access areas. Built to protect pedestrians and cyclists, especially those travelling at speed, and eliminating or mitigating injury from falls. Bikesafe® systems are quick and easy to install, with curved sections to flow with cycle ways.
