Project Background

The Mount Kembla Shared Path Project involved the construction of a shared pathway, the reconstruction and refurbishment of two bridges, and road improvement works along Cordeaux Road through to the foothills of Mount Kembla.

The project involved approximately 1.2 kilometres of three-metre wide pathway constructed along the southern side of Cordeaux Road, earth works and retaining walls, and improvements to the road which is currently quite narrow and subject to flooding.

The pathway project has been co-funded by the Council and through a donation from Illawarra Coal, and $4.5 million in funding through the State Government’s Restart NSW Resources for Regions Program.

Wollongong City Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery OAM said the public private partnership with Illawarra Coal will help Council realise better, safer access for all people using this roadway and pathway especially for the residents of Mount Kembla and surrounds.

Why was Moddex product selected?

Our work for Wollongong City Council’s Mount Kembla Shared Path – along Cordeaux Road – involved a complex mix of handrails, balustrades and bikeway barriers. Through Moddex Project Management solutions – our team delivered a full design process, including design intent and installation drawings.

Through our modular, flat-pack product delivery to site – we were able to stage installation in line with the client’s completion of phases for this 1.2 kilometre project.

Products/configurations used on project

  • Bikeway Barrier Bikesafe BS30 & BS40
  • Commercial Balustrade Conectabal CB10
  • Industrial Handrail Tuffrail TR20

Smooth and continuous offset rails for cyclist safety

Moddex Bikesafe Barrier solutions deliver on Austroad’s recommendations for smooth and continuous rails. Knuckles and joins are streamlined through all Bikesafe rail designs for the ultimate in cyclist safety. Bikesafe configurations BS30 and BS40 were integrated into the Cordeaux Road project to accommodate full and partial offset barrier protection, as required.

Flexible barrier and handrail solutions for Austroads compliance

Moddex handrail and barrier solutions were configured to meet the Austroads guide for shared paths on this project. Conectabal CB10 facilitated pedestrian protection along sections of path exposed to traffic or falls of over one metre. Tuffrail handrails connected seamlessly between Conectabal balustrades and Bikesafe barriers for areas along the path not exposed to traffic.

Client comment/feedback:

“I would like to personally thank the team for getting the installation of the handrail across the line today. It was a big effort with a few hurdles but I really appreciate the professionalism and dedication shown.

Most impressed with your understanding of important timeframes/programs and your ability to sort out issues in a timely manner.

It would be a pleasure to work with you all again.”
