Delivering certainty, efficiency and durability to large scale infrastructure in Australia and New Zealand is what Moddex is built to achieve. It is a truly incredible to be a part of major commercial projects that have a direct impact on everyday people’s lives.

In 2018, Moddex was engaged to supply a durable, low-risk solution for the reparations of Kurnell Reservoir in Southern Sydney, New South Wales. Located in the Kamay Botany Bay National Park, the important unit of infrastructure supplies a significant amount of water for the peninsular, as a part of Sydney Water.

Tough in the openness of an exposed coastal environment, our marine-grade Industrial Handrails was first choice for the upgrade of this essential infrastructure. Fully compliant under the provisions of Australian Standard 1657.2018, Moddex’s Tuffrail® range is engineered to withstand rugged conditions. All of the essential access points and critical perimeters of the Kurnell Reservoir were secured with our fully modifiable Tuffrail® Industrial Handrails to ensure safety and compliance.

Kurnell Reservoir: A Brief History

Kurnell Reservoir site has a tumultuous yet resilient history, enduring the wrath of several natural disasters over the past two decades.

After dam levels fell to a low 34% in 2002, during the worst drought with a century, the feasibility of constructing a desalination plant on the site was pitched and confirmed viable as a long-term solution in securing water security for the catchment area. After successful construction of the desalination plant in 2010, the plant functioned efficiently for years until it was tragically damaged by a freak tornado and storm front in 2015.

A reinstatement plan was summoned between governments to repair the plant, which was completed in October 2018. Currently the plant continues to operate at full capacity of 250 million Litres per day.

Why was Moddex product selected?

Moddex has been Australia and New Zealand’s leading supplier of low-risk, compliant modular barrier for many years, earning a rippling reputation across the industry. Our project portfolio showcases a vast range of applications on some of Australasia’s most notable large scale infrastructure projects. Working in unison with some of the most reputable contractors in the industry to deliver impeccable results at every turn.

For the Kurnell project, Moddex’s  pre-engineered systems enabled our team to execute installation with great flexibility and speed.

Requiring less maintenance and reducing opportunities for more corrosion, our no-weld modular systems removes the need for no hot works permits, no toxic fumes and no site shutdown.

Unlike the traditional welded handrails, our proprietary modular designs and streamlined construction methods eliminate design, onsite fabrication and engineering costs. All of these factors combined equate to the lowest total cost of ownership in the industry.
