Project Background

As an innovative, game-changing barrier system provider to the construction industry, Moddex was excited to deliver the handrail and balustrades on the Cranbourne Line Upgrade.

The Victorian Government has invested more than $1 billion on the Cranbourne line, removing four level crossings and building the new Merinda Park Station – improving overall safety, reducing congestion, and allowing for more trains, more often.

As part of a two-stage project, Moddex worked on a 15-span rail bridge across the busy Abbotts Road in Dandenong South. The completion of the first stage of this project has already had a positive impact on the surrounding environment, creating a new open space for pedestrians.

In 2018, trains were safely separated from more than 20,000 vehicles that use the road each day, causing the busy industrial precincts to experience minimal congestion.

A long-term, trusted partner to Australia’s construction industry

The challenging nature of these large-scale infrastructure projects required a construction partner who could deliver barrier solutions with a very short lead time while also offering easy and fast installation.

Working with our long-time construction partner, McConnell Dowell (as part of the Western Program Alliance who is delivering the project), they knew they could trust the expert design and manufacturing teams at Moddex to deliver high-quality, economical and fully-compliant handrails and barriers.

Key benefits for the Design Team

When scoping and designing large scale infrastructure barrier solutions, many suppliers can over engineer the specifications to meet project requirements.

Led by Moddex’s Major Projects Consultant Kaine Jamieson, significant time and budget were saved by identifying areas for improvement in the initial design stage.

On this project, Moddex was able to provide very precise specifications and material quantities – this meant the right amount of fixing, spacing and steel sizing were used, while meeting all compliance and safety standards.

Moddex was very accommodating and were able to help us with design as well. They were able to identify if there was a design error or a design not as per the specs…they would always talk to us and always come up with the better option.

Senior Project Engineer, Andri Permadi

Key benefits for the Construction Team

Moddex’s modular systems are designed to easily connect with each other, saving teams on the ground significant time during installation while also minimising risk.

With many other contractors on site and competing deadlines for construction partner McConnell Dowell, Moddex was able to bring on more resources during the installation process. This flexibility ensured a seamless installation phase and the meeting of all project deadlines faced by the constriction team.

“It only took less than four hours to install it on the bridge once it was pre-assembled on site,” said Andri. “Which is why we choose it in the first place.”

Our proprietary BridgerailTM  Bridge Barriers system offers a true point-of-difference for large scale infrastructure projects. For the Abbotts Road rail bridge, our end-to-end solution provided a number of key advantages, which included:

  • A prefabricated kit-form system, allowing for speedy installation
  • With our easy modular assembly there was no need for site welding
  • A tough and durable product, with a 100-year design life

It’s a great time saver and also works very well in this type of project where we can assemble it on the ground in larger, longer lengths and then install it with the crane. This is very important for us to meet the project deadline.

Rob, Lead Installation Contractor

Bridgerail is a recent addition to the Moddex product family, offering a high-quality, pre-engineered solution suited to public access areas that form part of road, rail or other elevated bridge structures.

At Moddex, we are committed to developing new and better ways to solve the unique challenges on major infrastructure projects such as Victoria’s level crossing removals. By choosing our proprietary modular barrier designs, we are able to deliver end-to-end systems that are simple and effective, while saving customers time and money.
