Project Overview
The $11 billion Metro Tunnel project connects Melbourne’s Sunbury and Cranbourne/Pakenham lines through twin nine-kilometre tunnels and five new underground stations. Moddex was engaged to design and supply custom pre-engineered handrail and balustrade systems for cross passages, cross tracks and emergency egress stairs, working alongside Stilcon Steel and the Southern Program Alliance.
Challenge
Tunnel environments presented irregular geometry, tight clearances, steep grade changes and corrosive conditions, while station egress areas involved some narrow shafts with limited access. Traditional fabrication would have increased congestion, required hot works and created installation risks in these confined, ventilation-controlled zones.
Solution
Moddex engineered modular, wall-mounted handrail systems modelled to the as-built survey data, using custom bends, variable elbows and robust fixings to achieve continuous and compliant runs across constrained CP and CT walkways. Fully pre-engineered, bolt-together kits enabled quick installation in both tunnels and station shafts, eliminating onsite welding and improving safety, accuracy and program certainty.
