Moddex: Crossing the Murray; water under the bridge.

Recruited by ID Fabrication who were contracted by the head contractor Fulton Hogan on behalf of SA Water, we were tasked with supporting the upgrade of old bridges on vital tributaries running into the heart of the Murray River.
Part of the upgrades to the Katarapko flood plain region, where much of the work took place, was to improve the management of water flows under an extensive ecological monitoring program to track the condition of vegetation, plants and animals. This data will be used to inform decisions on watering events in the future.
Some of the key benefits expected as a result of the upgrades include improved connectivity between riverine and floodplain habitats, as well as the localised freshening of groundwater systems. The ability to undertake more frequent watering activities will work towards the sustainability of tree and native animal and marine populations throughout the region, an added bonus for visitors to the plains.
Being in a remote area, the Moddex team pre-planned to accommodate for additional lead time for supplies and freight travel to supply the sites. As one of the largest and most integral waterways flowing from the Great Dividing Range in NSW to the mouth of the Murray in Wellington SA, this project took on added significance and scale. Moddex welcomed the responsibility to see the investment from SA water was well executed, delivering on the goals to promote tourism and camping in the region.
