This project involved the construction of a new multipurpose hall at Deception Bay State School. With a tight timeline in place, construction company, Evans Built, required a handrail solution that could be delivered and installed quickly, while meeting all necessary compliance standards. Challenges
Evans Built faced significant pressure to meet a tight construction schedule while ensuring the project adhered to safety regulations at Deception Bay State School. Traditional welded balustrade systems would have posed several issues that could have jeopardised the project’s timely completion and quality standards:
- Extended Installation Time
- Traditional welded systems require on-site fabrication, which can be highly time-consuming.
- Welding is not only labour-intensive but also requires proper curing and drying times.
- Hot work permits are also required, adding layers of safety protocols that ultimately slow down construction, making traditional welded systems less ideal in such a time-sensitive environment.
- Welding also requires a variety of tools and equipment, often needing specialised on-site setups. This adds complexity to the logistics of the project, including tool management, material handling, and potential delays due to equipment availability
- Safety Hazards: The use of welding equipment introduced potential hazards for the school, such as fires, toxic fumes, and the risk of injury to students and staff, especially since the school remained open during the construction of the new multi-purpose hall.
- Lack of Quality Control and Consistency: Traditional welded systems are highly dependent on the skill of the workers performing the welds. Variations in craftsmanship can lead to inconsistencies in the final product, which can compromise both safety and aesthetics. These inconsistencies often result in additional time needed for rework, inspections, and quality assurance.
Moddex Solution
The following Moddex products were installed that offered a faster, safer, and more streamlined alternative, enabling the project to stay on track to meet its deadlines:

- Assistrail Disability Handrails AR110, AR120, AR140 and AR160
For this project, our modular handrail and balustrade systems eliminated the need for on-site fabrication and welding. All products were manufactured in our local Queensland facility and then flat-packed for delivery, ready for quick assembly by our installers. Without the need for hot work permits and costly set-ups, installation time was significantly reduced, with install completed within a few days. A welded system would have taken over double the time to install, meaning over 100hours installation time was saved by going modular.
Because our handrails were manufactured off-site, Evans Built could be assured of strict compliance with building codes. The handrails were manufactured in a controlled factory setting with advanced tools, automated machinery, and specialised equipment to achieve precise measurements, so when the handrails came to site, they would fit perfectly, with consistent quality. This proactive quality control approach prevented costly rework, improving overall project efficiency!
