Project Background:
The Kororoit Creek Road Level Removal Project is part of the Victorian Government’s broader program of works to remove 75 dangerous and congested level crossings and improve the capacity across Melbourne’s public transport network by 2020.
In mid-2017, an Alliance of McConnell Dowell, Arup and Mott McDonald was awarded the multi-million-dollar contract as part of the Western Program Alliance (WPA). The dangerous and congested level crossing was removed in late 2018, by elevating the Altona Loop to improve service reliability.
Kororoit Creek Road is used by 22,000 vehicles each day and is part of VicRoads’ Principal Freight Network. It is a key transport corridor that connects the Williamstown North industrial precinct, nearby ports, and residential areas to the Princes Freeway.
Removing the boom gates has created better freight connections, improved traffic flow, significantly removed the risk of incidents between passenger trains and road vehicles and has provided a safer passage for pedestrians and cyclists.
Moddex worked alongside WPA to supply handrails and balustrade along the 800m stretch of duplicated trackside.
Why was Moddex product selected?
The modular flexibility of the system gave WPA the ability to efficiently install the barriers along the new trackside. This removed the need for temporary edge protection and the associated costs and helped in the completion of the project.
